Jellyfish posters

Concepts: Ferdinando Boero. Layouts: Fabio Tresca. Illustrations: Alberto Gennari

These posters, in different versions, show the evolution of a campaign that started under the umbrella of the Mediterranean Commission (CIESM) and then evolved within the activities of several European Projects (SESAME, MED-JELLYRISK, PERSEUS, COCONET, VECTORS OF CHANGE) and a Flagship Italian Project (RITMARE). The magazines Focus and Focus Wild greatly enhanced the citizen science approach and produced a web page in Italian ( http://meteomeduse.focus.it/ ) that has been expanded to the whole Mediterranean ( http://www.perseus-net.eu/en/jellyfish_map/index.html )

The graphical layout is by the graphic artist Fabio Tresca.
The concept of the campaign is by Ferdinando Boero.
The artwork of the poster is by Alberto Gennari, who made  the first jellyfish drawings on pasteboard, with oil and acrylic colours, to pass to digital painting in the latest version.

Overfishing, which removes top predators from the sea,  is one of the factors behind jellyfish "blooms",  or suddenly increased numbers. A  "vicious circle" can then follow in which  large numbers of medusae feed on fish larvae and juveniles , and "further reduce the resilience of fish populations already impacted by overfishing," according to the report, from FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean.
